Adrian Jurado small presentation. (until 1996)

Adrian Jurado studied painting, sculpture and art history at the Academy Saint Carlos in Mexico. In 1992 and 1993 he was the founder and director of a gallery for contemporary art in Mexico. He also worked for a cultural television channel of the European Union and worked on graphic design and book illustration. In 1994 Adrian Jurado was invited by the Mexican and Belgian governments to take part in an art festival of the Latin America Institute, the "EUROPALIA" in Brussels. There he painted a mural on a wall of 162m2 in size, which thematized three important periods of the history of Latin American people: the pre-Spanish period, the period of conquest and the period of modernism. One part of the work raised the theme of the destruction of old cultures, which is a contemporary issue in the continent of Latin America today. This, and other themes such as economic dependence, dictatorship and intolerance, are the subjects of Jurado's art. His painting follows his instinct, not to remain inactive in the light of nationalism, intolerance and racism, with which we are confronted today. He understands his aesthetic of horror as a means of engendering fear in the observer and thereby encouraging him or her to consider the origins and causes of present injustices in the world.
