avec une nouvelle collection de peintures qui font osciller le sujet entre présence et absence, premier- et arrière-plan, l'artiste-peintre anglais, Lorrain d'adoption, investit la Maison Rabelais au coeur de Metz cet été 2011.
Wayne Sleeth ici poursuit la lutte formelle entre 'figure et fond', figuration et abstraction, dont témoigne son oeuvre depuis une dizaine d'années déjà. Dans ces toiles récentes, on est face à des épurations de composition qui mettent en valeur l'aspect non-substantiel de toute image. On pense à ses repères spirituels - à Rothko, à Turner, à Monet, à Cy Twombly, mais aussi à François Rabelais-même, figure ambigüe du 16eme siècle qui, de passage à Metz, en quelque sorte contribuait à la Réformation.

With a new collection of paintings – and some objects - which question the presence (and absence) of the subject and motif, the notion of fore- and back-ground, the English artist Wayne Sleeth, based in Lorraine since 2001, occupies la Maison Rabelais in the historic centre of Metz this summer.

Here he continues his formal interrogation of what is ‘figure’ and what is ‘ground’, of figuration and abstraction, as his work has revealed over the last ten years. In these recent works, the viewer is faced with compositions which propose the insubstantial and the inadequacy of the image; formally, we think of the language of Rothko, Turner, Monet, and of Cy Twombly among others, including François Rabelais himself, emblematic and enigmatic character of 16th Century France, residing here in Metz for a time, and in some way contributing to the Reformation in Europe.
